Home Depot Now Selling $20 LED Lightbulbs

Just one month after Cree and General Electric reveaLed similar products, Lightning Science said Monday that Home Depot will begin offering an LED bulb that will achieve 50-percent more lumens at half the price of competing LED-based bulbs. Called the A19 EcoSmart LED, the company developed the 9-watt light bulb exclusively for Home Depot, and is now on sale for a meager $20 USD. That's significantly cheaper than GE's just-announced $40-$50 USD 450 lumen LED bulb.

So is this better than a conventional light bulb? Certainly. It uses approximately 80-percent less energy than a traditional 40 watt incandescent light bulb. It also has an expected life span of more than 22 years, based on 50,000 hours of usage. The A19 EcoSmart LED bulb is also manufactured in the USA, contains no mercury, and is completely recyclable.

"The EcoSmart led light bulb represents a huge cost savings to the consumer, both in terms of the reduced use of electricity coupled with savings on replacement costs versus traditional bulbs, " said Jorge Fernandez, Merchant-Electrical, The Home Depot.

Last month GE said that its new 9-watt LED light bulb replaces the standard 40-watt incandescent, providing a 77-percent energy savings and a lifespan that could last from birth to high school graduation (17 years if used for four hours daily). GE's LED light bulb also contains no mercury, and is made with Cree XLamp XP-G LEDs.
